Find Jack
- Find Jack runs smoother on Palm webOS version 1.3.5. We highly recommend upgrading your Palm® Pre™ or Palm® Pixie™to webOS version 1.3.5 or higher. Additionally recommend closing the App Catalog card when running Find Jack.
Send My Location for webOS
Useful Hints :
- GPS lock up.... Occasionally the collection of location based utilities on the webOS™ device can hang. This has become more infrequent with newer versions of both Send My Location for webOS and new versions of webOS™ itself. If Send My Location for webOS fails to return your location after following the steps below, often a reset of the device will clear things up. Reset the device by holding the power button down, after a few seconds several buttons will appear on the bottom of the screen. Tap the red "Power" button and then "Restart".
- Outside is better...The app makes use of the built in location services of the webOS™. These services can provide the location based on the phone GPS, or other information such as cell tower or WiFi locations. The GPS accuracy is by far the best - to get a good GPS fix, you need to have a good unobstructed view of the sky. Indoors or in locations where there is poor GPS reception, the location services will provide information from the less accurate methods.
- Ensure your location services are enabled... To do this, enable the Location service using the Location Services Preferences in the Launcher (generally the right most screen in your list of applications....). Also it is recommended you enable Google Services as well as GPS. In the top right corner of the Location Services Screen (utility on the phone), tap Preferences. Under Preferences, tap "Locate Me Using...." and check both GPS and Google Services.
- Ensure you have a data connection... Either your cellular or WiFi connection needs to be on. Your phone can provide a GPS fix and Send My Location for webOS will display your location if you have no data connection (ie airplane mode or somewhere with no signal). However the data connection is needed to look up the approximate address. It also makes it easier to send the email or text ;)
- Not all phones are created equal.... and most are not as equal as your Palm webOS ™ device. The email and text messages generated by Send My Location for webOS have a link to Google Maps that plots your location. If you send your message to desktop/laptop users or a user with a webOS™ device, they can click it and display the map. If the person has a different type of phone, there is a good chance that their device will not be able to open the Google Maps web page or launch the Google Maps app on their device by clicking on the link. An example are Blackberry phones. While they may have the Google Maps application loaded, clicking on a link in a message does not launch that application like it does on a webOS™ device . Individuals with those devices can copy and paste the lat long from the message into the Google Maps app (under Directions as either the Start point or End point address), but that is not as fun...
- Check the time... Send My Location for webOS displays the time in the first row of the display. This is the time the location was obtained. If the time is significantly older (several minutes or hours) than the current time - the location data is not current. The location based services will provide cached (locally stored) location information from that last time the location was obtained if for whatever reason no information is available at the time of the request. If you get a result that has an old time stamp, tap "Update Location Data" to try to get newer data. You may want to move closer to a window or clearer location if new location data is not displayed after several attempts.
- Remember this is a free app... We hope it is something useful, but please do not use this in life critical or emergency situations. The location data is generally good, but it is best effort and can be off by hundreds of meters. Have fun using it, but do not bet your life on it.
- thanks
